As you might imagine, this area is covered with trees, and the government protects much of the surrounding land as natural parks. Remaining landed that is not protected has been staked and claimed by agricultural and forestry companies. There are several listed on the Santiago exchange holding thousands of hectares all over Chile and in this area in particular.
This translates into a healthy export business with lumber and pressed boards, but Chile also has some strong growth in construction and a large domestic market for these products. Companies like Masisa S.A. (MASISA:Santiago) and Forestal Constructora y Comercial del Pacifico Sur S.A. (PASUR:Santiago) are seeing massive growth.
