The newest member of the iPhone family made its debut 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning. The iPhone 3G S, which comes less than a year after its predecessor the iPhone 3G, was announced only two weeks ago. But if the iPhone 3G S is not a long-awaited product, it is definitely a much-anticipated one.
TheAssociatedPress reported that morning crowds waiting to buy new iPhones were not as large as at previous iPhone releases. This is likely because customers could pre-order them online. Also, this third-generation iPhone is not as much of an improvement on the second-generation iPhone as the second generation was on the original iPhone. However, the new model does come with some nice new features.
Reuters listed some of the new iPhone features, which include: “a faster processor, video capability, an improved camera and better battery life.” But these improvements will have to be enough to keep the iPhone ahead of other competitors, such as the Palm Pre, the Blackberry, and the soon-to-come next Google Android phone.
Then there is the Nokia N97, which also launched on Friday. The iPhone 3G S will have to keep ahead of these newcomers to maintain its smartphone dominance. It is likely that, at the end of Friday, the number of Nokia N97s sold will be compared with the number of iPhone 3G S units sold.
Many analysts have been speculating about how many new iPhones will be sold during the launch. ZDNet.com reported, “Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is guessing Apple will sell 500,000 iPhone 3G S units over the weekend, that’s half of what the iPhone 3G did over three days last year.”
Though the estimates may be down from previous releases, the iPhone will still be in great shape if it can reach 500,000 sold in the first weekend. It would be a sign of the iPhone’s maintaining a solid lead against the competition. One analyst told DailyTech that only 84,000 Palm Pres sold in the first weekend, which was still a very good number for the Palm Pre.
Editor Christian DeHaemer of BreakAway Investor and Crisis Trader said the iPhone has to be “the biggest ‘must-have’ gadget to hit stores in a good long while.” He writes, “The iPhone is famous for its ability to do… almost everything. It's a cell phone, a video player, a GPS system, an MP3 player, an Internet browser, a video-game system and more… all without the hassle of plugs, modems or cables.”
Chris went on to discuss the 3G technology behind the iPhone. He said that this 3G technology, already common in the West, is beginning to sweep into other emerging markets. Chris calls this the “3G revolution,” and has recommended to his reader how the 3rd generation could make you rich. Get all the detail in his exclusive report on the 3G Revolution.
