With sales up as a result of "cash for clunkers," General Motors is adding more work shifts and overtime.
From Katie Merx, Bloomberg:
(Bloomberg) -- General Motors Co., benefiting from the Obama administration’s “cash for clunkers” program, is boosting production by 60,000 vehicles in the second half, the company said today in a statement on its Web site.
GM is adding shifts and overtime as well as restoring weeks of production at select facilities, partly in response to increased demand from the government-sponsored clunkers program, the company said. GM will add shifts at the CAMI plant in Ontario, Canada, where the next generation Chevy Equinox and all-new GMC Terrain are built, and Lordstown, Ohio, where it assembles the fuel-efficient Chevrolet Cobalt, adding back 1,350 United Auto Workers and Canadian Auto Workers union jobs.
“We are running our plants to maintain maximum flexibility and keep production tightly aligned with customer demand,” said Tim Lee, GM group vice president, global manufacturing and labor, said in the statement. “The uptick is an encouraging sign that vehicle sales are turning around and we will ramp up quickly to meet that demand.”
