ESPN Needs to Replace Dick Vitale With President Obama

E-mail Print

Today kicks off the 72nd annual NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and if you’re like most red-blooded Americans you probably completed a bracket or, at least, will watch a few minutes of basketball this weekend. I know I will.

For most college basketball fans, having your team playing in the NCAAs provides an element of gravitas. There’s a sense of pride when you wear your favorite hat or shirt in public places knowing that your team is participating in one of the most prominent sporting events, second only to the Super Bowl.

As a graduate of an ACC school, basketball becomes part of your DNA. Sleeping out all night only to get a ticket for the big game – or even a great seat – becomes part of legendary stories told over the decades by alums and friends of the program.

But times do change. Family obligations and career advancements pose challenges for even the most enthusiastic fan to keep up with the team. Sure, you know when the nationally televised ESPN game is scheduled, but knowing who the leading rebounder is, or five-star recruit about to sign, can prove to be somewhat overwhelming.

Well, evidently it’s not that challenging for some.

Let’s take the President of the United States. If you haven’t seen it, ESPN ran a segment titled “Barack-etology” in which President Obama has to pick each and every winner of all 63 games. What is a somewhat “recreational” concept quickly gets disturbing once you realize that the president really knows the ins and outs of most of the basketball programs. He sounds like a talking Sports Illustrated!

Now, following the video on ESPN.com, there are several comments listed by viewers, and many are not very supportive of the president. But, I’m here to provide some clarity as to how the president has the time to study and research the number of pick and rolls UNLV played out in its conference tournament.

It’s obvious that the president is rehearsing for his next gig as a college basketball analyst with ESPN! Yep, move over Len Elmore. Bye-bye Dicky V. Your services are no longer needed in Bristol! Look for the 2013 Maryland/Duke match-up to feature Mike Patrick and Barack Obama! I know I’ll be watching, if I have the time, of course.

The president is no fool. It’s crystal clear to him that he is a one-term president. Simply look at the most recent approval ratings and you’ll see what I mean. According to Gallup, Obama’s job approval rating fell to 46% last week, an all-time low for the president. As I stated on Tuesday, if the weather weren’t improving and the markets hadn’t hit a yearly high, the numbers would be much lower.

And you know it’s desperation time for Obama. When you see him turning to Fox News for an interview, you know things must be bad.

One year ago, when three-quarters of the country was expecting great things (because O’B said great things would happen if voters elected him), he wouldn’t even drive past the News Corp building in midtown Manhattan. Now he has a frequent visitor’s pass!

So, best of luck to all the teams, as well as President Obama. I hope he wins the Oval Office pool!
